I stumbled upon GBL about 10 years ago as a professor where I inherited a large introductory higher ed course with poor reviews and attendance (50%). I revamped the course (attendance climbed to 90%, reviews spiked) and have been gamifying learning and development programs ever since. My work has resulted in over 30 publications that showcase the effectiveness of GBL - specifically on motivation, engagement, and subject matter retention. Simply put, courses and training modules are proven to increase motivation, engagement, and effectiveness when GBL techniques are integrated properly. Additionally, I led a 10 year content analysis of research articles on GBL. This analysis identified the 6 factors critical for successful design and is the foundation of our approach to gamifying learning and development programs. |
